Description

This piece is about a bruised woman who's trying to escape from shadow-like phantoms, with her life, on a cold morning. I call it, 'The Coldest Day', because, to the woman, being chased by phantoms on a winter morning, bare footed on flooded ground, this is the coldest day she will ever have. If she lives, she will remember her cold hands trying hard to pull up an old axe from the water to protect herself from impossible shadows.

Thanks everyone for all the compliments, they really mean a lot! I'm glad you all got the mood and feel I was going for. This was the first tme I've ever illustrated something like this, I was getting nervous about if I made it look cold enough or not, and if everything made sense in the piece, etc. I'll be updating my website soon, so you can all see what I have there at www.chrisjanderson.com

Chili - I was going to add breath coming out of her mouth, but I couldn't find a way to do it without adding to much detail to the piece.

It's going to be a challenge trying to out do this piece. I'm still trying to figure out the subject matter. Thanks again everyone.

great concept Chris...i love the drawing and the atmosphaire...great look in the eyes of the woman, the fear, the need for help...i just wanna say that maybe in a very cold day like this with all this snow...the water must be frozen, ice...but thats just a though...great job again!!!

Great work, the forsty tree branches and water are very well done. Perhaps her feetare misshapen; they seem to "fan out" a bit too much. That's a minor flaw though. :)

I'm not giving the highest grade just because this is so skillfully painted, but because of the emotion so well achieved in its wholeness. Perfect

I think there is something wrong with her legs, they kind of remind me of froglegs, (;)) in the way they are bent, and her right ankle is also bent in a rather wierd way. I think there might be some issues with her hips aswell. Anyways, I really like it, it has a great feel to it =)

When you're life is danger, sometimes your body seems to numb out certain objects. I guess that is where we come to realize that the bitter cold is not even affecting her. Nice job, I like it...good psychological art. Only critique is that the two trees on the side of the picture don't seem to fall in place with the lady. It could seem that they are planted in the middle of the street. I shouldn't say much. I can't do any better anyways...hehehe

Looks kindalike where I live (North sweden) =)
Except for the missing breath which I really think would add to this piece I´ld also like some whiter or more "frozen" feets and ankles considering the fact that water leads cold ten times better then air.

Other then that I think it´s a superb job.

the feeling from this piece is amazing. the water at her feet and on her axe is life like and the terror in her eyes is something so deep. you should do more like this piece.

Can´t stop looking at it =) Still if I´m gonna be really picky I noticed one more thing about the feet. Shouldn´t there be a kinda angled view of them? you know when you stick half a pole in water it looks kinda bent beeing seen from the surface due to the cut angle of the light when it passes the surface of the water..

Pretty stuff. You painted it perfectly, maybe I would have some suggestions to water (and lights on it). Anyway you deserve for good marks for it ;)

i like the concept its cool although the one thing that bugs me is the pose i think it would be very awkward to swing an axe in that position and it looks as though she has just swung it at something but you dont get to see what (this could all be wrong unless its a very light axe although it does look very big and heavy). i do love the style the trees are done in though and the water is fab over all +6
