Description
My goal was to evoke the feeling of infatuation that one has for another. The only thing is, it is an infatuation that a young boy has for a girl that he always imagined and hoped would exist, and then finds her.I sketched some of this in pencil and completed it in Photoshop. It took 40 hours finish.

Pros:Very beautiful colors chosen, really giving this old fairytale feel.. very nice light set too..
Whatever she has on her head is just soo beautiful.. Cons:Agree with katea about the eyes, but i'm not sure if it ruins it or makes the feeling of her stronger...anyway, different..
Feels like something odd is going on with her clothes.. is someone pulling her skirt? also (i don't really know if that's a technical crit! hehe) but her pose seems soo unfomforable.. on the other hand it works well with the weird dreamy eyes.. The birds are what I'm most concerned about..the left one.. i don't know really, and the right one looks frozen... maybe they're meant to?? Description says nothing about it, so I'll just assume they're meant to be "normal" flying birds Overall opinion/feedback:There are little (whatever it's called in english) pieces of flowers here and there...it's a real small detail, but it really bothers me that i don't understand where they come from...
The very detailed textures on the trees are IMO taking away too much attention from the couple in the centre... SO.. overall... *sigh* just so beautiful.. lots of crits there, but still I think it's very well done... |

Pros:Your technique is awesome and the color scheme is very well chosen. Of course the background; I think it is stunning, just stunning. I like every little detail in the background!
Cons:I think the boy's head is a bit to big and his perspective is a bit weird too me. Looks like he's twisted or something.
The crossed eyes..they are already mentioned. On one hand I find them a bit destracting because it makes her focus on the boy a bit of. On the other hand..it makes her really adorable. There are some things bothering in the reflection of the water as well, don't know where they are coming from or what they are. Overall opinion/feedback:The overall picture is great. You did a great job on the girl. I love what she's wearing

It's really beautifull! I always look at the picture first and try to imagine what is going on and then read the discription, and I thought that the boy had maybe invented the girl because of the drawing he holds of her which I really liked, but hey, your story is even better!

The crosseyed look has allready been mentioned, and I'll mention it again, because it's really destructive to the context of the image.

Slither-Astray - You are correct about the story, the boy did create her from the drawing. I made this for a competition on Concepart.org, the goal was to create a kid who meets his/her imaginary friend. The lonely boy was infatuated with his drawings of her, and wished she could exist, and then finds her. I didn't want to tell the whole story in the description because if I told it all, some people may get thrown off by it. I'm glad you liked it.
Jane, SailorDidi, Xris, Daequitas-EVERYONE, thanks a lot for your crits and kind words. It feels good to show a piece like this to people after spending so much time on it.
Also, for everyone who commented on her eyes being crossed, I learned something interesting about that. Some people feel her eyes are crossed, and some people feel her eyes are fine. I was having a difficult time trying to decided if I should change them or not, and I came up with a conclusion. I painted those eyes based on what I saw happen in reality. When a person stares at something close enough, the eyes cross slightly, but not in a deformed/extreme way, just slightly noticably. If the head is tilted as the girl in the painting is, then that eye factor is extremefied by that because the nose gets in the way of the right eye. So, long story short, in reality, this is what I saw in how eyes work when staring at something close and focusing the eyes on something particular, like the boys face, eyes, etc. But reality isn't always what should be illustrated because what one person sees in reality, isn't always what someone else sees. Sometimes what should be illustrated is what we universally precieve to be true, not what only a select few see as true, so that the picture communicates it's idea better and more universally to the audience. I've learned that from this. ALthough, sometimes it's difficult as an artist to know how other people see things versus how you see things so that you know exactly how to draw/paint what you need to create. I did change the eye when I sent this to the Spectrum art book this past weekend to see if it helps it get in. I will definitly consider this more in future artworks.
